Liminka's upper secondary school - a school building as an expression of culture
Liminka's upper secondary school was found in center of Liminka in 1961. There
are students from Liminka and Liminka's neighbour villages, for example
Lumijoki. In this year there are 177 students and 15 teachers in our school.
Liminka's upper secondary school is one part of big building which includes
junior high school and senior high. The school building is visible part of
Liminka's center. School building represents 1960's low flatroof building habit
which turns off time before it. Elevation is made by bricks and white
miniriteplatelining. The building is coloured by very neutral colours: white,
yellow and brown. The basic repairing represents 1990's architecture.By the
way, the first elementary school, in Oulu's region, is situated in Old-Liminka.
It is built in 1868 and nowadays there is Vilho Lampi's artmuseum.
In our school students must study mathematics, English, Finnish, Swedish,
religion, biology, geography, history, physics. chemistry and sports. And
students can also choose optional subjects like French, German, music, arts,
psychology, IT, filofosy, Latin and Rome's history and extra courses from
compulsory courses. There are also a lot of free time activities, for example
needlework-, sport-, art-, music- and computercourses in the school building
after lessons. School is a place where you can meet your friends between lessons
and also after school.

Liceo Scientifico Statale "F.Severi"

The schoolbuilding is bigger than our school in Liminka. There are hundreds of students and also a lot of teachers, more than we have! The building is coloured by yellow and white and it has two floors. The classrooms are small, there are only desks and chairs for students. The students study all day in the same classroom, only the teacher changes. Schooldays starts at 8.20 a.m but students (and the teachers also) are always late, so the schoolday starts normally at 8.30 a.m.
When the students come to school they kiss each others to cheeks and some students greet the statue of Madonna in a lobby. In the lobby there are some vending machines for drinks and candies. We wonder what are the men who are sitting in corridors. They just sit and read newpapers and smoke. Also the Italian students didn't know who they are! And about the smoking... the students smoke in side the schoolbuilding. Boys smoke inside, for example in corridors, and the girls smoke in toilets. It is very far from our habits in Finland!
The place where school is situated is near the sea, the rainwaystation and the centre of Castellammmare di Stabia. There are the place for cars, some kind of field for playing, for example football, and the trees and bushes. The building is arounded by a wall which is locked after the schoolday. The enviroment is not too noisy or dirty and it is very safety for the students.
The students go to school by bus, by car, by scooter or by foot. They never use bicycles because they say it is very dangerous to use bicyckles in Castellammarre di Stabia. And we know also that some of Italian students can't drive a bicycles. But we also know that Fabio loves to drive a bicycle!
Sometimes the students don't take their books to school and sometimes they decide that they won't go to school! Very rebellious, why don't we ever do that? The books are like directorys and they don't have any pictures in the books, only very small text.
When we were there, we always stayed at the library which was in side the school building. We all think that our school system is very different from Italian system. We think that our is better...
