Roads and traffic as expression of culture

The roads are a remarkable factor in formation of cultural environment. Old roads are often narrow and they curve in the landscape among the settlement. On the sides of the roads, near the settlement, has grown beautiful tree stand. In Liminka's area there is a remarkable so called riversideroad, which has formatted on the side of the Liminkariver.

Since 1960 the way of making roads has changed considerable: They started to build roads regardless of terrain and the roads were also moved away from the settlement. The roads started to look monotonous. Beside of the new ways there are usually sideways for pedestrians and eye lists.

Ways, which pass the population antres are usually wide and the speed limits are therefore high. It is typical for flat land that the roadsides are a little bit higher than the rest of the landscape.

Because of the traffic and speed limit requirements the motorways have become even wider with years.

Part 2

Narrow goblet streets are a familiar sight in Italy, but only in citys or smaller towns. Motorways are totally different. The ancient romans were masters at building roads. A good road network system was needed because of the huge army and naturally it made the trade easier than before. Some of these very same roads still exist in Italy. And some of the old roads are now bases for the newer ones. Even if the technics (of how to built roads) are'nt the same anymore, the appearance hasn't changed much: the parements and alleys are usually covered with goblet stones and because the villages were normally built at the foot of a hill (it was easier to defence them) so the streets are very sheer. The motorway system is also a bit different than in Finland. Here we have to pay large sums for car taxes, so that we can drive, but in Italy there are tolls on motorways where you have to pay for using the road.
