Finnish doors have to be designed to last changeable climate and hard use. That's why doors are in high position in Finnish house. Especially in the winter it's important to have doors, which are made to protect us against cold weather. That's the reason why doors are much steadier and durable here in Finland than for instance on the Mediterranean region. On our region verandas became general in the 1800s. The most general type of verandas was rectangle looking, bowed veranda, which was built high on the countryside. The forms and the decorative motifs of the verandas expressed craze of the time. Buildings, which were decorated with several decorative motifs and details, were granaries. People wanted to highlight their value and that's why granaries' doors were decorated neatly. ![]() In the countryside the entrance of the houses have changed from 1800. There are hardly any proper entrances in Finland nowadays. That's one of the things that is harmful because what could be more beautiful than have a huge entrance in the house with gates and fences. Doors express the use of building. For instance school doors differ from the ones used at home. Doors used at school are more massive than doors used at home. The doors also express the social status of the owner. The higher position a person has in the society the wealthy-looking doors he or she has. Historical era can be seen from the doors. It can be seen from the designing, forms or details. It's amazing how much you can deduce about culture of country merely with the help of doors. That's why when people travel from one country to another they should pay more attention to the small parts, which can really be seen in the everyday life. ![]() Part 2 Usually Italians doors are very heavy and massive. Doors carvings are modern and artistic because Italians have been skilful builders for many thousand years. Style of architecture has been taken from the ancient Greeks. That can be also seen nowadays the doors when you pay a closer attention to the doors. The difference between Italians and Finnish doors can be noticed especially from carvings, handles and forms. People seem to appreciate these kinds of small details there very much. They are aesthetic, they love to see beautiful doors when they arrive from work or schools. When you open a door in Italy you've got to spin a handle. That's a major difference when it comes to the Finnish doors. The locks represent old design in Italy. But they are very practical and good. The entrance in the block of flats where I lived was a very carefully secured. We also found out that the wealthier family was they were living better and the better entrances they had. In the countryside the doors were traditional and old-fashioned and that can be especially seen in the old village of Caserta which was situated near Naples. The old village was just a small part of Caserta but it was quite attractive. There we had plenty of time to observe better the doors and there we also visited a beautiful church of which door was a huge, beautifully decorated door. It was like a work of art. That was the same in Castellammare when we visited a church there. If there were amazing painting and decorations inside the church we must say that the carvings in the front door representing Castellamare's and Sorrento's seals with were as neat if not neater. Down of doors there were pictures of priests' which were impressive. By and large Italian doors were like doors which represent Italian culture from the age of Italians pompous time when Italy was one of the richest countries in the world. The doors are in Italy like a gate to other dimension. We don't claim that in Finland the doors don't a have big meaning but in Italy those doors are like paintings or some kind of art which have been part of house over thousand years. Door from Italy |
